OUTRAGE AT HONGKONG.

Sir H. JOHNSTONE asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention had been directed to a recent outrage committed under the regulations of the Chief Inspector of Police at Hongkong, which is now form- ing the subject of inquiry by a commission appointed by the Governor; and whether he would cause special investigation to be made as to the manner in which the revenue derived from licensing houses of ill-fane is raised and exponded for the service of the colony.

HICKS-BEACH eald,-My attention has been directed to reports of the occurrence alluded to in the first part of the hon. member's question, which are now being inquired into by a commission appointed by the Governor of Hongkong. I do not think any opinion can properly be expressed on the subject, until that commission has re- ported and its report has beng received and considered. I think the hon. member is under some misapprehension As to the amount of the revenue mentioned, but the commission will doubtless inquire into the point, and I will take measures to secure that they shall do so, (Hear, hear.)
